• Bilberry and taurine help maintain retina health

Age Related Eye Study 2 (AREDS2) is a 5-year study sponsored by the National Eye Institute in 2006. The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether or not oral supplements made with the AREDS formulation have an effect on the progression of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Advanced age-related macular degeneration is the most common eye condition that is a leading cause of vision loss among people ages 50 and older. AMD causes damage to the macula, which is needed for sharp, central vision and allows people to see objects straight ahead.

The AREDS2 formulation consists of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, FloraGlo® brand lutein, and zeaxanthin. This study was a modification of the earlier AREDS study which included beta-carotene instead of lutein and zeaxanthin. Beta-carotene was replaced due to the link to lung cancer in smokers.

The results are that participants who took the AREDS2 formulation are 25 percent less likely to progress to advanced AMD over the five-year study period. Adding lutein and zeaxanthin also proved to be beneficial for those with less nutritional diets.

• What was different from the first and second AREDS study?
From the AREDS formula, beta-carotene was removed and lutein and zeaxanthin were added to the formula. The second study found that lutein/zeaxanthin made a difference in cataracts for those with low dietary levels.

• Am I at risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
Age is a risk factor for AMD, but there are other factors also. There is also a genetic component that may increase the risk of AMD, including other risk factors such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and smoking.

• Who conducted this study?
This study was supported by the National Eye Institute and other National Institute of Health components. The study itself was chaired by Emily Chew, M.D. who is deputy director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications and deputy clinical director at the National Eye Institute.

Why Lutein?
Lutein is a carotenoid found in the human body with a high concentration in the macula of the eyes. uteins role is to absorb harmful blue light and protect the eyes. As humans age, there is less naturally produced lutein in the eyes, leaving the eyes unprotected and more susceptible to damage.

Multiple studies have found that supplemental lutein and zeaxanthin have a preventative effect on age-related eye diseases. In the AREDS2 Study by the National Institute of Health, lutein is found to decrease the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration. In addition to the benefits for eye health, lutein is also important for cognitive function and skin health.

Non-esterified (Free) Lutein vs. Esterified Lutein

•  Non-esterified (Free) lutein is readily digestible and absorbed by the cells in our eyes

Esterified lutein has low bioavailability so it can't be absorbed by the cells in our eyes easily

Absorption of esterified lutein is less efficient when taken with low-fat meal
